Our small stream moves forward in bends and curves and in the month of Baisakh it only has knee deep waters Our hearts started searching for this stream ever since we came across these rhymes from Tagores verses in early childhood. Little did we know that this was Kopai River, a tributary of Mayutakshi River, flowing through Santiniketan, Kankalitala, Bolpur, Labhpur and Kirnahar. This stream hardly carries any water except for a couple of months during monsoon. Kopai has inspired many litterateurs over the ages. The river was referred in many writings of Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay too. The river also has a surprising geological importance which is little known to thousands of tourists visiting. Microliths of crystalline stone and petrified wood dating back to 1250-1000 BC are found in many places of the river.
