The history of the temple of Nandikeshwari temple is associated with the event of Sati’s self-sacrifice at the Yagna Sabha of her father Dakshya, because the later insulted her and her Husband – Lord Shiva. It is believed that the neck-bone of the Devi’s corpse fell here to form the Shakti-Pith, when the Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu mutilated the corpse of Sati from the arms of Lord Shiva. The name of Goddess is derived from ‘Nandi’, the mascot and follower of Lord Shiva, and ‘Ishwari'(Goddess), meaning ‘One who is worshiped by Nandi, the divine bull.
